What is keratosis pilaris (chicken skin)?
KP happens when keratin, a protein your skin makes, builds up with dead skin cells and plugs the opening of hair follicles. Each tiny plug becomes a small, rough bump. It isn't contagious, and it has nothing to do with being unclean.
It often runs in families, looks worse when skin is dry, and for many people gets milder with age.
- Very common
